Maritime Decarbonization With Biofuels for Ships

NX Shoji Co., Ltd.

Environmental Value

NX Shoji Co., Ltd. began trial operations using a fuel mixture of heavy oil A and biofuel ("B24") on the company's own dedicated fueling vessel, the Aikomaru, in February 2024. In April 2025, the company signed the Basic Agreement on the Demonstration Project for the Supply of Decarbonized Fuel to Ships at the Port of Kawasaki with the City of Kawasaki and Kanematsu Petroleum Corporation. This agreement advances decarbonization and carbon neutrality efforts at the port. NX Shoji obtained permission from the City of Kawasaki to use the pier and establish a proprietary biofuel supply system, strengthening the supply capabilities of the company.

In September 2025, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government selected this system as a Project Supporting Commercialization of Decarbonized Fuel Utilization. This project supplies B24 fuel to vessels operating to and from the Port of Tokyo, helping decarbonize the Tokyo port area and supporting the development of a decarbonization model for the maritime sector.

Looking ahead, NX Shoji will build on experience gained at the Port of Tokyo to expand operations to other ports and regions. The company also aims to broaden the use of B24 fuel across a range of applications, including land transportation, fuel for production facilities, and heavy equipment and generators used at construction sites. NX Shoji is committed to expanding the company supply base and ensuring a stable supply to meet diverse fuel needs.
