Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) was founded in 1912 as Wosong Merchant Marine School, and is now one of China's leading maritime universities. SMU's College of Transport & Communications was the first college in China to offer undergraduate education in transport and communications, and it now administers four bachelor-level programs in Transportation, International Shipping Management, Logistics Management, and Transport Engineering
Nippon Express (China) and Nippon Express (Shanghai) established a "Nippon Express Scholarship Fund" in January 2016 and concluded a memorandum of understanding with SMU to provide scholarships over a period of ten years. This year was the fourth in which these scholarships were offered and, following careful screening by the university from the end of October, ten third-year SMU students were selected as scholarship recipients.
Managing Executive Officer Tatsuo Sugiyama, Regional General Manager of Nippon Express' East Asia Region, attended a scholarship award ceremony held at the university, where he mentioned the many favorable comments offered by visitors to the East Asia Region's booth at the 2nd China International Import Expo (CIIE) held in Shanghai in November, and briefed the students on Nippon Express's business endeavors in East Asia, including its China-Europe cross-border rail transport services, its SS7000 cross-border trucking service connecting Shanghai and Singapore on a 7,000km route, and its ongoing expansion into Asia and Africa. Numerous questions posed by the students during the post-ceremony networking event prompted a very lively exchange of views.
Nippon Express remains positively committed to undertaking social contribution activities in Asia to help develop human resources capable of playing active roles in the logistics industry.
