First Japanese forwarder in Panama
Nippon Express USA, Inc. (Toshiro Uchida, President), a local subsidiary of Nippon Express Co., Ltd. (Mitsuru Saito, President), has established a Panama Branch in Panama City, the capital of the Republic of Panama, that opened for business on Monday, July 2, 2018.
Famous for its canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Panama not only serves as a transit point on maritime routes but also as the largest container-handling arrival and departure point in Latin America. Ships sail directly from ports around the world to Panama, which functions as a major hub for cargo bound to Latin America.
Set up as one of the world's largest free trade zones on the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal, the Colón Free Zone allows cargo to be provisionally imported, kept in bonded storage and then re-exported without having to pay duties or consumption taxes. Around 80 Japanese companies operate in Panama, which functions as an important pivot point for their sales and distribution strategies to Latin America.
By opening its Panama Branch, Nippon Express seeks to enhance its logistics service offerings in Latin America, and to better meet diversifying logistics needs worldwide.
